The Cavs are the latest franchise to have a new superstar and they’re also a team that will be without one of their top three scorers for at least a couple weeks.
LeBron James, who turns 33 on Tuesday, is a key cog in what could be the biggest turnaround in the franchise’s history.
James, who was named to the All-NBA second team after leading Cleveland to a playoff berth last season, is one of the league’s most consistent scorers and the Cavs have won six consecutive NBA titles since 2011.
But after a disappointing 2015-16 season that saw him average 29.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals in 29 games, James has taken a step back.
James has averaged 28.4 points and 9.4 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game this season.
James, though, is also expected to miss the remainder of the NBA All-Star Game in Milwaukee, which begins Tuesday, because of a left hamstring injury.
James and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert are both set to miss Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
But if James doesn’t play, the Cavs could have an open roster spot for the first time since 2013-14.
James had two games remaining before his injury.
He was limited to 14 minutes in the Cavs’ 104-93 loss to the Houston Rockets on Feb. 14.
He had three rebounds, four assists and three steals in 28 minutes against the Sacramento Kings on Feb .
“I’m going to be here for the long haul, and I’m going back to work with our doctors,” James said.
“The best thing is that I’m not going to miss a single game, so hopefully I can play this season without having to miss any games.”
The Cavs have a glut of veteran talent that has led to an opportunity for a young team to rebuild.
But the team’s rebuild, as it has become known, will take a little longer.
Cleveland is also the fourth team in the NBA to play two games in the same night this season, with two games on the road against the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.
The Cavaliers play two of their first four games in Toronto on Saturday.
James has averaged 33.2 points and 7.3 rebounds over his last seven games, but he has struggled with his shooting since returning to the Cavaliers last season after spending time in Los Angeles and Cleveland last season.
In 14 games since being sidelined by the injury, James is shooting 42.6 percent and averaging 22.7 points, 6.9 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per contest.
The Cavs are still in a battle with the San Antonio Spurs for the second overall pick in next week’s NBA draft.
James is viewed as the top prospect in the draft and Gilbert has been adamant he wants him to go No. 1.
But a trade is still possible.
The Cavs have reportedly been interested in acquiring Kevin Durant for several months.
The team is still without one other veteran star.
Cleveland lost its No. 2 overall pick, point guard Dion Waiters, to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday.
The other draft picks that the Cavs lost are guard Shabazz Napier, center Zaza Pachulia and forward Beno Udrih.
The Cavaliers will likely have to make a move in order to get any kind of young talent.
They will have to find a new point guard, but the team is hopeful it can land one in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft or the 2019 NBA draft, sources told ESPN.
The teams are expected to meet on Wednesday.
The draft is expected to take place Wednesday at the United Center in Chicago, but ESPN reported that the league has been pushing for a Thursday night start to accommodate players for the draft.
The Celtics will have a chance to add a second-round pick to their 2018 NBA Draft class if the draft takes place Wednesday night.
The Celtics are also expected the Cavaliers will receive a second pick from the New York Knicks if the Draft is held in Chicago.
