Movies are an increasingly popular form of entertainment in Australia, with more than 200 million movie tickets sold last year alone.
And as movies become increasingly expensive, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find good quality films in Australia.
But a new survey has found that movie buffs are far more likely to watch a movie in person than online.
The survey, conducted by film festival site MovieTickets.com, also found that 75 per cent of moviegoers said they wanted to watch movies in person, up from 52 per cent in 2012.
This is despite Australia’s notoriously high cost of living.
“We have been seeing a lot of the same problems that moviegoers have with streaming,” the survey said.
For instance, while 93 per cent said they would prefer to see a movie online if it was cheaper, they were just as likely to say they would be satisfied watching the same movie at home.
Movies can be expensive.
A typical movie ticket from the mid-90s was about $60,000 in 2017.
Even with this price tag, the median movie ticket in Australia is only $15,000, according to MovieTickets, with some films even more expensive than that.
So it’s no surprise that many movie buffs want to watch their favourite movies in a theatre.
A moviegoer from Western Australia said they’d love to see one of the best films of the year in a movie theatre, but that they’d prefer to watch it on their own.
Another person from Queensland said they were looking forward to watching a movie with friends, but would prefer the best movies to be in a cinema.
Other respondents were surprised that the survey found so many people said they didn’t like movies in their own homes.
One woman in Melbourne said they only liked the films that were available in their local cinemas, and would never watch them on their smartphone.
She added: “I’d rather go to the cinema and see a good movie with my family, than have a bunch of random people who don’t like films.”
MovieTickets’ survey also found people were more likely than ever to have heard of online movie streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
It also found the majority of people wanted to see movies in cinemas when they were not in their homes, with 57 per cent saying they would rather watch a film in a theater than at home, compared to just 26 per cent who said they did not want to.
