A Hindu temple in Kolkata has closed its doors, with police saying it was a “joke”.
In a video posted to social media, a young woman wearing a turban and an elaborate necklace is seen walking through the temple grounds, surrounded by a group of men.
She is accompanied by two men wearing colourful robes and carrying an axe.
The video has been shared more than 40,000 times and garnered hundreds of comments.
Police said the group of young men had been posted in the city recently to collect a deposit on a building they were to demolish.
They also said the woman’s actions were “a parody of religious freedom”.
“The temple has been closed due to a joke on social media,” a senior police official told reporters.
“The matter is under investigation and the police will take the appropriate action,” he said.
The incident comes a day after an angry mob attacked a temple in Ahmedabad, killing one person and injuring more than 60 others.
Earlier, the same group vandalised the temple in Bandra, injuring three people and forcing it to close for several days.
The police said it was investigating the attack on the temple, which had attracted thousands of tourists and visitors.
The video is believed to have been filmed at the temple.
